A J1 visa holder is either a student or scholar who comes to the United States to participate in a work-and-study
based exchange visitor program. Every month, 170,000 J1 students and scholars work, study, and teach throughout the
United States. If you are traveling to the USA on a J1 visa (either as a student or a scholar), as part of your visa requirements, you - and any family members traveling with you - will be required to have adequate health insurance coverage for the full duration of your trip. Some schools and sponsor organizations provide a mandatory group health insurance that meets these J1 health insurance requirements, while other programs may allow you to purchase coverage your own.

All J1 visa holders are eligible for the Student Secure plan and you can purchase a minimum of a month, or you can renew up to four years. Coverage includes doctor visits, hospitalization, maternity, mental health, pre-existing conditions, and organized sports.
If you will be coming to the US on a J1 visa for one year or less, the Atlas Travel Medical insurance plan is an excellent option.
