Dubai Property for Sale Overview

INVEST IN DUBAI

Dubai is one of the most important business and tourism hubs in the world. invest in dubai Over the last few years, it has become an influential centre for business and now 80% of the world’s ten largest companies have offices in the city, invest in dubai with nearly 400 out of the Fortune 500 companies represented here.
Property in Dubai is one of the strongest real estate markets, having seen growth of over 25% in 2013. This growth has continued into 2014 and makes Dubai properties a very attractive investment. invest in dubai real estate sector has matured rapidly and is driven by demand and quality. Dubai’s excellent tax set-up has made it a very popular destination for investors interested in Dubai property for sale, resulting in one of the best rental markets across the globe.invest in dubai

Where to invest your pot of money in Dubai

INVEST IN DUBAI

This may seem like a first-world problem to have, but both the real estate market and the stock market in Dubai have been outperforming global benchmarks handsomely.gold market

invest in dubaiIn effect, for those with a reasonable sum of money to invest – anything between Dh50,000 and a few million Ds – gold market the choice could become a little overwhelming if not downright confusing.

Of course, the choice may veer towards investing in stocks the closer one is to the beginning of that range (Dh50,000) as there won’t be gold market  much that you can buy in Dubai with that much down payment. However, as you move up the investment ladder – more cash in your pocket – invest dubai the choice becomes more difficult.

Now, there is no dearth of property gold market  consultancies tracking the surge in house prices in Dubai and indeed the rest of the UAE. And if that wasn’t enough, we keep getting reminded of the same by the unsolicited “best time ever to sell/buy” text messages on our phones by invest dubai  hard-to-pronounce property agencies.

Indeed, some of the more gold market established names like Asteco reckon that average sales prices rose by up to 60 per cent in prime residential developments in Dubai last year.

“Sales prices for apartments and villas rose by 23 per cent in Q4 2013 alone, fuelled by increased confidence and the fact that the new law regulating maximum LTVs [loan-to-values] was not being consistently enforced, although cash buyers still dominated,” John Stevens, managing director, Asteco Property Management, said in a year-end report on the emirate’s real estate market.

Reports suggest that property prices in the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi too surged as much as 37 per cent in some districts in 2013 – and while that may seem modest compared to invest dubai  growth, it is among the best property returns in the world. The growth in Dubai property prices, of course, was the highest in the world.

But even that growth – of 60 per cent per annum –gold market  gets dwarfed by the stock market gains, which topped 107 per cent in 2013 for the Dubai Financial Market General Index.

For the uninitiated, the DFM General Index increased by 107.7 per cent to 3,369.8 points at the end of 2013 compared to 1,622.5 points at the end of 2012. At the sectoral level, the Financial & Investment Services sector increased the most by 169.2 per cent, followed by the Banking and Real Estate & Construction sectors by 120.6, and 108.2 per cent, respectively.gold market

The Abu Dhabi Exchange (ADX) index, on the other hand, rose by more than 63 per cent to reach 4,290.30 points at the end of 2013gold market  compared to 2,630.86 points at the end of 2012.

Those stories – of growth in property and share prices – are not over yet, with the first two months of 2014 witnessing a massive 25 per cent surge in the DFM General Index while the ADX General Index is up by more than 15 per cent in two months.invest dubai

gold market Simultaneously, property prices are rising at a rapid invest dubai clip too, and thus the dilemma of where to invest.

invest dubai Of course, as pointed out above, the decision is a little easier for those with a smaller kitty, as the property market necessarily needs a reasonable investment, invest in dubai even it’s limited to approximately 30 per cent of the property value (25 per cent minimum down payment plus property registration fees plus agent commission, etc.).

For those seeking liquidity along with returns, the decision to invest in stock markets makes sense as shares can be bought and sold virtually instantly, as opposed to property transactions.

However, if you have a reasonable pool of money and don’t need to be highly liquid, the property market offers the added benefit of rental returns – invest in dubai which you may or may not receive from shares (in the form of dividend). Or you could live in the house you invest in while shares offer you no such incentive.

In addition, share prices could, in theory, decline by as much as 10 per cent a day – invest in dubaiwhereas that’s extremely unlikely to happen in the real estate market.

Most importantly ,invest in dubai it’s your individual circumstances, needs and preferences that play a big role in deciding your asset class. Prudent investors and investment advisors always suggest a portfolio approach to investment so that one can hedge a decline in one asset class with an increase or stability in other/s.invest dubai

Trip Cancellation Insurance or Travel Medical Insurance

When traveling internationally, it can be confusing to review all of the various insurance options available to you. One important threshold question is whether you should buy travel medical insurance or trip cancellation insurance (often also called simply “travel insurance”). The primary distinction between these two types of policies is what risk you are ensuring. With travel medical insurance, you are purchasing short-term, international health insurance that will cover the cost of medical treatment around the world for any injury or illness you may incur while traveling. With trip cancellation insurance, or travel insurance, you are primarily ensuring against the financial risk of having to cancel your trip for certain reasons.

Insuring Your Trip or Your Health?

Basically, travel medical policies insure your health, and trip cancellation policies insure your trip. To help you understand the primary differences between these two types of policies, we review the cost, the coverage, the exclusions and the target market for each type of policy.

Travel Medical Insurance

The Cost. Travel medical insurance is relatively inexpensive insurance. Most travelers do not get sick or injured, and when they do, most medical bills are limited to a doctor visit or an outpatient hospital visit and maybe a prescription. Typically the price varies based on the overall amount of the coverage you purchase (usually from $50,000 to $1,000,000), the deductible associated with your plan (typically from $0 to $500), the overall benefits of the plan and the length of your trip. But in general, policies start as low as one dollar per day, or even less, and you can purchase as little as 5 days coverage, making travel medical insurance very affordable.

What it Covers

Most travel medical insurance policies provide fairly comprehensive coverage for injuries or illnesses that occur while on your international trip, including:
  • Inpatient/Outpatient Care – if you are admitted to a hospital or treated and released
  • Injuries/Illnesses – if you get hurt or sick while on your trip
  • Doctor visits – including clinics and urgent care centers
  • Prescriptions – if related to an injury or illness that occurs while on your trip
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation/Repatriation – if you need to be evacuated to another location, or if your body needs to be returned home
  • Lost Luggage/Trip Interruption – although not as extensive as you would get with a trip cancellation policy, there is typically some benefit for lost luggage and some coverage if you need to go home to deal with an emergency, then resume your trip

What it Does Not Cover

Travel medical policies are not designed to provide permanent health insurance nor trip cancellation insurance, so there are a few key areas where coverage is not provided. If you have a pre-existing condition, want a regular check-up or immunization, need maternity coverage or want a refund for a lost deposit, you will be out of luck with most travel medical policies. Here’s a short list of the main categories of excluded items:
  • Preventative Care – checkups and immunizations are typically not covered
  • Pre-Existing Conditions – some plans provide limited pre-existing condition coverage, like “acute onset of a pre-existing condition” up to a certain amount, but for the most part any existing condition or regular prescription you have will not be covered
  • Pregnancy/Maternity, Mental Health – permanent or student policies typically cover these items, but travel medical policies will not
  • Trip Cancellation Expenses – deposits on cruises, hotels, flights, etc. if you have to cancel your trip

Who is it for?

Students studying abroad, travelers on extended trips, business travelers and expats are all appropriate purchasers of travel medical insurance, and typically these categories of travelers would not consider trip cancellation insurance.

Trip Cancellation Insurance (Travel Insurance)

The Cost. Trip cancellation insurance is relatively expensive, and the price varies primarily based on the overall cost of the trip itself. So if you plan to take your family on a two-week cruise that costs $20,000, expect to pay $400 to $800 or more for comprehensive trip cancellation insurance; travel medical insurance would cost roughly $60 to $80 for the same trip.

What it Covers

The most important part of a trip cancellation policy is the section of the policy that deals with what events permit you to cancel your trip and receive benefits. Although “cancel for any reason” provisions have recently become popular, they are very expensive and not standard on most policies. This means you must cancel the trip for an approved reason to receive the coverage. The most common reason is sickness or injury, or a traveling companion that actually prevents you from traveling, as certified by a doctor. Other reasons include death, natural disaster, strikes, terrorism, accident while en route to the airport – and in each case, it must prevent you from traveling on your dates. If you cancel your trip for an approved reason, then you can file claims for any amounts that you have spent on the trip that are not refunded by the airline, hotel, cruise operator, etc. In addition to this primary cancellation coverage, most trip cancellation policies also include some of the following:
  • Emergency medical coverage – like a travel medical policy, but often not quite as comprehensive.
  • Trip interruption, trip delay, lost baggage, delayed baggage, missed connection – and other travel incidentals
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation – just like a travel medical policy

What is not covered?

Most importantly, the trip cancellation coverage is not available if you cancel your trip for a reason that is not approved. For instance, if you have to move your vacation dates for school or work reasons, or if you don’t have the funds you need for the trip, or if you get sick but recover before it’s time to travel, or if your girlfriend gets sick but she wasn’t traveling with you, or if you just change your mind – unless you purchase a policy with “cancel for any reason” protection, there are a lot of valid reasons to change or cancel a trip that will not be covered by a typical policy.
Although in general the medical coverage included in a trip cancellation policy is not as comprehensive as you get with a travel medical policy, often trip cancellation policies can provide better coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.

Who is it for?

Cruises, expensive vacation trips and other short-term trips of less than 30 days that will mean the loss of a lot of money if you cancel are all appropriate trips to consider trip cancellation insurance. Although some policies are available for trips longer than 30 days, for longer trips eventually the cost of the coverage becomes prohibitive and the insurable portion of the trip costs diminish, making trip cancellation insurance not a good investment. Finally, people with pre-existing conditions that cannot be covered by a travel medical policy can often find better coverage with a trip cancellation policy.

Short Term vs Long Term Health Insurance

To help you evaluate both ends of the spectrum, this article describes the benefits, length of coverage and purpose of both long term and short term insurance options.
When choosing between a long term and short term health insurance plan, it's important to ask yourself two general questions:

How long will you need your insurance?

For periods of less than one year, a short term plan may be ideal. Long term plans offer annually renewable coverage, so you can keep the same plan for an extended period of time, but tend to cost a bit more.

What would you like your insurance to cover?

If you have pre-existing conditions, plan on becoming pregnant, or would like a more comprehensive plan, a long term plan may be your best option. If you just need doctor visits and general coverage, the short term insurance section below will be of most interest to you.

Short Term Insurance

light bulb remember Tip: Unlike major medical or long term plans, short term insurance also allows you to purchase the exact amount of days that you need, but typically require you pay upfront for the period you need coverage.

What it is

Often called travel insurance plans, short term policies are specifically designed to cover both medical and travel experiences for a period of one year or less. They allow you to choose your own policy maximum and deductible, permitting you to stay in control of your coverage and the price.

What it does and doesn't offer

Since you can typically only have your coverage for one year, these plans will not cover for long term conditions like maternity, mental health and pre-existing conditions. However, they will provide coverage for new illnesses or injuries while on your trip, including doctor visits and hospitalizations. Travel benefits like trip interruption and lost luggage are also included, so be sure to check the policy wording for details.
light bulb remember Tip: Many short term plans exclude pre-existing condition coverage — Meaning that if you develop a condition on your first plan it may not be covered if you purchase a second short term plan.

Who it is for

Since domestic plans typically don't cover medical expenses overseas, these plans work well for both individuals and families traveling outside of their home country looking for general coverage. Frequent travelers also get great use of these plans, since travel associated benefits like lost luggage or trip interruption come standard.
These plans also work well for students on shorter study abroad programs who do not need to meet strict insurance requirements. In some cases, short term plans can be great options while waiting on long term coverage through an employer or a private company.

Costs and payment options

Short terms plan are typically not renewable are offered on a daily rate, allowing the purchaser to buy coverage for the exact period of time needed and help keep your overall cost down. If you plan on traveling to the United States and are under the age of 30 you can purchase a plan for as low as $38 a month.
If you need an insurance plan for a year or less, view our Atlas Travel plan . If you need short term coverage for a little longer, our Patriot Travel plan can be purchased up to two years and provides similar benefits.

Long Term Health Insurance

What it is

Long term insurance plans (often called major medical insurance ) are annually renewable and comprehensive options specifically designed for you to stay on the same plan for long periods of time. Since you will typically keep a major medical plans for many years, they are medically underwritten - meaning you will need to answer health questions to ensure you're qualified for coverage. Unlike travel plans, which allow you to choose your own policy maximum and deductible, long term insurance coverage is usually less flexible, but offers a higher policy maximum and additional benefits, like preventative care.

Who it is for

Long term international insurance plans work well for both individual expatriates and families needing coverage for at least one year. They also work well for international students, allowing them to keep the same insurance plan throughout their studies. Anyone with pre-existing conditions or planning to become pregnant would be interested in a long term plan as well, since newborns are generally added to a plan automatically and pre-existing conditions are covered automatically or after a waiting period.
light bulb remember Tip: Some long term insurance plans offer additional riders (at an extra cost) to cover maternity, dental and vision, which may not be covered by the plan automatically.

What it does and doesn't cover

While these plans are more costly they will provide many benefits not covered by short term plans, such as pre-existing condition coverage, wellness visits and preventative care. Of course no insurance plan can cover every visit, but long term options will generally offer the most coverage.

Costs and payment options

It is no secret that healthcare inside of the United States is costly, however long term international insurance plans don't have to break the bank. Plans like our Global Medical option would cost a family of four (age 40,35,9,5) about $265 per month, while the same family needing coverage outside of the U.S., China and Japan, would expect to pay about $200 a month for the same coverage. Premium payments are also more flexible, allowing payments to be made monthly, semi-annually, quarterly or annually.

5 Tips To Overcome Depression While Studying Abroad

When you first arrive somewhere new, everything is exactly that – new. It’s exciting to experience things for the time, and it’s easy to thrive on that excitement, at least in the beginning. But for most people, there comes an inevitable crash because you miss your family and friends or because you missed something important at home. Anything can trigger it. This sensation is most commonly known as culture shock, and it can certainly resemble a temporary depression. Culture shock is normal – and expected – and we’re here to reassure you that we know exactly how you feel, and that “this too shall pass.” Here are 5 quick tips to deal with your depression so that you can make the most of your study abroad:

1. Don't Wallow

light bulb remember It's ”OK“ to be upset, but limit the time you allow yourself to give in to it.
If you’ve been struck by culture shock or depression while studying abroad, the first thing you need to remind yourself is not to wallow in it. Everyone is entitled to feel upset, for whatever reason, but it’s important to not overindulge those feelings by listening to sad music or spending all your time cooped up indoors talking to family and friends from home. Dedicate 30 minutes to give in to whatever is bringing you down – to cry, to scream, to rant; however you choose to express your feelings – and when that time is up, let whatever is upsetting you go.

2. Acknowledge Your Depression, and Get it Out!

Dealing with your frustrations or distress and then letting it go is the best possible thing you can do while studying abroad. Getting your thoughts down on paper (or on your computer) can help you release, and feel better. Journaling in an old-fashioned notebook, or blogging if you are not old-fashioned, is a great way to feel like you’re being heard without ever having to explain your emotions. It can also be a good exercise in reflection, because when you look back a month later you will have more clarity as to why you were feeling the way you were and how to prevent those feelings from coming back a second time.

3. Sign Up for Activities You Enjoy

Regardless of whether you’re in another country for six weeks, six months or a year, you need to adjust to the new life you’re creating for yourself, even if it’s only temporary. Sign up at a gym or find a local pick-up league for your favorite sport to get your endorphins back. If athletics aren’t for you, grabbing a book and reading in the park is always nice.

4. Be Around Friendly Faces

One of the major causes of depression is loneliness. If you are having problems navigating the culture, language, or if you are simply missing your friends and family back home – break out and seize the new experiences in front of you. Chances are, there are a ton of people in your program, or at your school, looking for some friends as well. Invite them to grab dinner, go see a movie, or go explore your new city together. There are also great websites like Meetup.com and Couchsurfing.org that will allow you to connect with likeminded people locally. Being around friendly faces and potential friends is an easy way to cheer yourself up.

5. Show Your Gratitude

There are so many things to be grateful for, and with the chaos of the day, we may not have time to realize all that is around us. Take some time in your day to choose something to be grateful for, or show how grateful you are by giving back. You can start a grateful journal where each day you pick one thing to be thankful for. You can also do this on Facebook, Twitter, or your very own blog to share your thoughts with the world. If you want to go one step further, see if you can volunteer at a soup kitchen or with another organization. Not only is this a great way to get involved, but you will be part of a team, and giving back each time you do it. This is a guaranteed way to feel better!
Remember to be healthy, happy and strive to get the most out of the experience. Remind yourself of what made you happy at home, too. It’s more than likely that similar things or activities exist in your new temporary home that can help you shake away the blues.
We’re all prone to feeling down every now and again – and especially while we’re in another country. But remember that being in a new place can be amazing, but also overwhelming and, at times, confusing. Enjoying the good times is easy, but making it through the rough times, while more difficult, is infinitely more rewarding. Hopefully these tips (and knowing that you are 100% not alone in these feelings) will help you clear those dark clouds and replace them with warm rays of sunshine in no time!

Maintaining Mental and Physical Well-being Abroad

There are few things more exciting than traveling to a foreign country. Studying abroad is an eye-opening opportunity that exposes you to new cultures, cuisines, ideas and environments.
Whether you stay for one week or one year, your adventures abroad will offer you invaluable experiences and new perspectives on the world we live in. Your travels will also expose you to new risks, both mentally and physically, and it is important to be ever cautious and aware of the surroundings in which you decide to explore.

Culture Shock

Culture shock is a very real experience. Before you think about drinking the water or eating the food, think about stepping off the plane. Will you understand the woman at the information kiosk? Will you be able to read the signs? It doesn't matter how many hours you've spent studying the language, or how handy your pocket guide is, everything changes once you are there.
Arriving in a new country is typically thought of as being a beautiful mixture of excitement, terror and joy. You will be disoriented. You may be jet lagged. You will not be at home. Here are some tips to help quell the mental cartwheels.

Have an Itinerary:

Know where to go when you exit the terminal. Before you leave, research the public transit system if you plan to use it. Knowing how to get to your first resting point greatly reduces stress. Play with Google Street View if the city has it; I knew how to navigate the 16th arrondissment of Paris before I ever set foot in France.

Engage the Culture:

Embrace the honeymoon phase of your acclimation. Speak to locals and stay active. Remember, even your frustrations are integral to your overall experience.

Bring a Memento:

It can be a photograph, a letter, a lucky coin, anything. These small, yet familiar objects can help you collect yourself if you're going abroad for an extended period of time and begin to feel lonely. Technology is never guaranteed.

Physical Well-being

Along with being mentally prepared for your time spent studying abroad, you must also be aware of the physical risks involved in such an endeavor. Taking certain precautions before leaving, and following some basic guidelines during your trip will help ensure that you remain healthy and comfortable.

Immunizations:

Depending on where you will be traveling, you may be required or recommended to receive certain immunizations. Here is the Center for Disease Control's resource that will help you find information about the specific region you will be visiting.

Health Insurance:

Having health and/or traveler's insurance is a good idea for both brief and extended travel outside of the U.S. We offer several packages that are designed to meet your specific travel needs.

Register with Your Embassy:

If you are an American going abroad, you can locate your specific U.S. embassy here. Registering with your embassy is a proactive step that helps you stay connected with your country in the event of an emergency.

Local Cuisine:

Getting to know a new culture involves getting to know their cuisine. Participating in trying new and exotic dishes is a wonderful way to experience a countries traditions and customs, but there are a few tips you should follow to keep your stomach smiling.
  • Eat food that has been fully cooked. Avoid raw or undercooked meats.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables that you can peel.
  • Drink sealed, bottled beverages. Boil water if you intend to drink it.
  • In some countries, try to avoid drinks with ice.

Go Prepared:

Put together a wellness pack to bring with you on your travels.
  • First Aid kit
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen.
  • Any prescription medicine (enough to last three months). A physician's note is also recommended to bring along with your medication.
Avoid any high-risk activity that may expose you to injury, and always use sound judgment when engaging a new city at night. Studying abroad is an incredibly rewarding experience, and being mentally and physically prepared throughout your journey will guarantee that you have the best experience possible.

Culture Shock for International Students

Coming to a new country can be disorienting and overwhelming. Whether you are studying in a country with the same first language as your own or not, assimilating to a new culture comes with many difficulties. One of the dangers of being an international student is experiencing “culture shock.”

What is Culture Shock?

Culture shock describes the anxiety that a person experiences when he or she moves from a familiar culture to an entirely new culture or social environment. It occurs when the language, gestures, customs, signs and symbols that you are used to and previously helped you to make such of your surrounding suddenly have no meaning or have new meanings. Perhaps most upsetting is the loss of social support system (family, friends, classmates, coworkers), and the necessity of starting all over again in an unfamiliar environment.

Typical Symptoms of Culture Shock

Some of the symptoms associated with culture shock include:
  • Sadness, loneliness, melancholy
  • Preoccupation with health
  • Aches, pains, allergies
  • Insomnia or excessive sleep
  • Changes in mood, depression, feeling vulnerable
  • Anger, irritability, resentment
  • Frequent frustration
  • Being easily angered
  • Loss of identity
  • Lack of confidence
  • Obsessions over cleanliness
  • Longing for family
  • Feeling of being lost or overlooked

Stages of Culture Shock

Most people experience culture shock in stages. Some people go through the stages of this process multiple times, and some may only partially apply to you. The stages are:
  1. The Honeymoon Stage
During this stage, everything about the new culture is exciting to you. You are optimistic and will generally focus on the positive aspects of your new home. You will study your new language with enthusiasm and make great progress. During this stage, memories of home are still recent and form a kind of protective shield.
  2. The Disintegration Stage
This stage can be triggered without warning by a small incident or by no cause at all. You will start to view cultural differences as a source of conflict. You might feel isolated, confused, and depressed, and miss familiar supports.
  3. The Reintegration Stage
During this stage, you may begin to compare the new culture unfavorably with your home culture. You might begin to reject the differences you encounter, and experience feelings of anger, frustration, and hostility towards the new culture. You might seek out comfort feed from your home country in an attempt to reconnect with what you value about yourself and your own culture.
  4. The Acceptance Stage
During this stage, you will learn to accept both differences and similarities between your home culture and the new one. You will become more relaxed and confident while you become more familiar with new situations and more experiences become enjoyable.

How Long Does Culture Shock Last?

Sometimes the symptoms of culture shock last just a few days, but more often they last weeks or even months. It may seem like your friends adjust easily while you are suffering. Multiple factors affect the degree to which you might be affected, such as your pre-departure expectations, coping skills, and past experience living abroad.

Dealing with Culture Shock

  • Remind yourself that what you are experiencing is normal.
  • Stay in touch with home by email, text, telephone, or Skype.
  • Surround yourself with familiar things with personal meaning, such as photos or ornaments.
  • Try to find familiar food if you can. Eat a healthy and balanced diet.
  • Include a regular form of physical activity in your routine.
  • Links with a faith community is helpful to some students. Many chaplaincies welcome students of all faiths for pastoral or social activities.
  • Maintain contact with your ethnic group and with local students.
  • Be prepared to take the first step and find activities which will give you a common interest with other students.
  • Check out what is on at the Students’ Union and its societies.
  • Maintain confidence in yourself. Follow your ambitions and continue your plans for the future.
  • If you feel stressed, look for help. There is always someone or some service available to help you.
  • Maintain a sense of humor. Be able to laugh at yourself and at the predicaments you get into.
  • Resist the temptation to constantly disparage your host country. Begin to consciously look for logical reasons for anything in the United States that seems strange, confusing, or threatening. There is a reason why Americans do things differently than people do in your country.

How Travel Advisories Affect Your Insurance Plan

As a responsible traveler, you know that having an international insurance plan that covers you outside of your home country is essential in case you get sick or injured during your travels. But, even responsible travelers might not know how their insurance plan is affected when travel advisories are issued for their destination countries. Recent events, like the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, have brought the issue to the forefront and have gotten many travelers thinking, “Under what circumstances am I covered or not covered?”
As travel advisories can be issued for many different reasons, at many different levels, you should first understand what a travel advisory is and what it means. Generally, travel advisories are issued by a government agency or organization, such as the United States or the United Nations, advising caution and providing safety information for those traveling to or visiting a specific country, region, or destination. In the United States, travel advisories are issued by the Department of State in response to safety and security matters. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issue advisories due to health concerns. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issues advisories due to inclement weather.
Most governments and organizations distinguish between long- and short-term travel advisories. A travel advisory issued by the Department of State can be issued in two levels: as a travel alert or as a travel warning. The CDC issues alerts, warnings, and watches.
  • Travel Watch (Level 1) – A travel watch is issued by the CDC to indicate the baseline or slightly above baseline health risks of traveling to a certain destination. A watch is a reminder to follow usual precautions for this destination, like receiving recommended vaccinations and immunizations.
  • Travel Alert (Level 2) - A travel alert is issued for a short-term event that might make your travel or visit unsafe or even dangerous. Examples of these types of events include strikes, demonstrations, or disturbances; a short-term health risk or disease outbreak; a forecasted weather event; or an elevated risk of terrorist attacks. Travel alerts are cancelled after the short-term event is over. You should practice enhanced precaution when traveling to the specified destination.
  • Travel Warning (Level 3) - A travel warning is issued when a long-term or serious situation puts travelers and visitors at risk, and non-essential travel to this destination should be avoided. Some examples of conditions that might result in a travel warning include civil war, unstable government, significant crime or violence, or frequent acts of terrorism. An imminent natural disaster or weather condition is issued as a warning. Travel Warnings are only cancelled after the situation has been resolved. Many travel warnings remain in effect for years.
Ultimately you are traveling at your own risk, so neither a travel warning nor a travel advisory can legally keep you from traveling to your desired destination. It is simply an advisory to help you evaluate your own risk. Your travel insurance policy is there to minimize your risk, so how does a travel warning or alert affect your insurance? What are some examples of these in popular insurance plans? Moreover, how does a travel warning or alert affect your overall decision to travel?

Benefits To Look For

Travel advisories can affect certain aspects of your insurance coverage, depending on your insurance company and the details of your plan. Some benefits are triggered by these advisories (as long as you meet certain conditions), while others are null and void if you choose to continue your travel in places with effective advisories. All plans will list these details in their master policy. Here is a list of insurance benefits that could be affected by a travel advisory:
1. Medical Benefits - Your travel medical plan is designed to cover you in case you get sick or injured. Some illnesses and injuries may be excluded under the policy wording (like pre-existing illnesses and injuries resulting from organized sports, for example). However, in special cases involving travel advisories, insurance companies have been making special announcements to make their coverage terms in these types of cases clear.
HCC Medical Insurance Services (HCCMIS), the plan administrator of our Atlas Travel plan, issued this statement to explain how their long-standing travel medical plan covers illnesses related to travel advisories, like the ongoing Ebola epidemic:
“The Atlas Travel policy offered by HCCMIS provides travel medical insurance and emergency travel assistance to members traveling outside of their home country and covers illnesses contracted while abroad, including but not limited to, the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) or Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF).
While Atlas Travel coverage includes these illnesses, it is highly recommended that you check for any travel or health advisories that might be active for the region or countries that you may be visiting and take necessary precautions. In countries for which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a Warning Level 3 (avoid nonessential travel), the medical condition that prompted the CDC warning is excluded. All other eligible medical expenses are covered as usual. For members in-country at the time of the CDC warning, 10 days are allowed for departure before the condition becomes excluded.”
Seven Corners, a reputable insurance provider and administrator of the Roundtrip series of emergency medical and trip cancellation insurance plans, also released a statement in light of the Ebola epidemic. Emergency medical care and medical evacuation would be available if the illness first manifests itself during your travels if it was considered an acute and serious emergency . However, they urge you to carefully review your policy coverage terms and conditions
2. Terrorism – Many travel medical insurance plans include coverage for injuries and illnesses that result from an Act of Terrorism. However, many of these plans also include conditions that void this benefit if a travel advisory has been issued.
For example, HCCMIS takes travel advisories very seriously and clearly states that the Terrorism benefit provided by their Atlas Travel plan is only available if the following conditions are met: “1) The Act of Terrorism is not in a country or location where the United States government has issued a travel advisory that has been in effect within the 6 months prior to your date of arrival; and 2) You have not unreasonably failed or refused to depart a country or location following the date an advisory to leave that country or location is issued by the United States government.”
Similarly, the Patriot Travel plan covers Terrorism, unless “the United States Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs has issued a Travel Warning on or within six months prior to the date of arrival, or if the Warning is becomes effective on or after arrival and the insured unreasonably fails or refuses to heed such warning and thereafter remains in the area.”
Other terms and conditions may apply for this benefit to be provided and it is important to know how an “Act of Terrorism” is defined by your policy terms. If an injury or illness occurs and it is not consistent with the definition the company has provided, it may be covered under your regular medical benefit instead.
3. Natural Disaster – Nature can wreak havoc at any time, so Natural Disaster coverage is a good benefit to have in a travel medical insurance plan. For example, in the event of natural disaster (hurricane, flood, tornado, tsunami, etc.) both the Atlas Travel insurance plan and the Patriot Travel plan provide a benefit of up to $100 a day for 5 days if the member is displaced from planned, paid accommodations due to evacuation from a forecasted disaster or following a disaster strike.
Double check to see if your insurance plan covers natural disasters or if it limits this benefit in the event of a weather-driven travel advisory.
4. Political Evacuation – This benefit is most often activated when a travel advisory goes into effect after your arrival in your destination country. It is designed to provide transportation to safety or even back to your home country in some cases. HCCMIS allows you 10 days from the issuance of a travel warning to notify them to arrange for an evacuation under the Atlas Travel plan.
In most cases, you are only eligible for this benefit if the travel advisory is not in place when the plan goes into effect. The Patriot Travel plan specifies in their exclusions that a Political Evacuation will not be covered if there is a travel advisory in effect on or within 6 months prior to the insured’s date of arrival in their destination country.
5. Trip Cancellation – Trip cancellation coverage protects you from losing the cost of your trip in case you need to cancel before you leave. This type of coverage is usually not included in traditional travel medical plans and is often purchased as a separate plan or optional rider. Typical covered reasons for cancellation include your own illness, injury or death; or the injury or death of a family member or traveling companion.
Most travel insurance policies do not cover trip cancellations in response to a travel alert or travel warning. The Patriot TRIP is a trip cancellation plan available as a stand-alone plan or as a rider to the Patriot Travel plan. This plan will not pay for any illness or injury or loss caused by or as a result of “[a]ny known, expected or reasonably foreseeable events or conditions that would cause a loss or claim..” A travel advisory would indicate a foreseeable event or condition.
Some plans may cover a cancellation in the event of a terrorist incident or a travel alert due to terrorism after your arrival. For example, the Roundtrip trip cancellation plans offered by Seven Corners covers a cancellation due to Terrorism according to the following terms:
“A Terrorist Incident that occurs in a city listed on your Trip itinerary and within 30 days prior to your Scheduled Departure Date. This same city must not have experienced a Terrorist Incident within the 90 days prior to the Terrorist Incident that is causing the cancellation of your Trip.”
Cancel for Any Reason is an enhanced benefit offered as a rider to a trip cancellation plan that allows you to cancel your trip, usually up to 48 hours before your departure, and to recover from 50 – 100% of your pre-paid trip expenses. This coverage is available on the Roundtrip Choice option, and allows you to change your mind about traveling in the event of a travel advisory or other circumstance.Travelers who are concerned about taking their trips in light of a travel advisory must have purchased their insurance prior to the alert being issued.
Remember, always be aware of exclusions in your policy wording that could negate or void your benefits in certain circumstances. For example, most travel medical plans will exclude injuries or illnesses that occur due to war, including nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare. Your insurance plan will clearly define any exclusions that apply, so be sure to read and understand them.

Additional Considerations Before Traveling

Travel warnings and travel alerts are issued for many different circumstances and situations. Each should be properly evaluated and researched before allowing it to inhibit or deter your travel choices. Some things to consider are:
  1. Identify whether or not the entire country is affected. Sometimes, the reasons for travel advisories are confined to particular areas of a country while other regions are perfectly safe. For example, Mexico’s recent advisories due to violence apply only to select states, while many popular tourist destinations remain safe. Another example includes advisories against travel to the Gulf Coast states of the US during hurricane season.
  2. Research the danger. Be sure to research and evaluate the danger and determine if the situation is improving or getting worse. If, for example, the advisory is in response to violence, find out where and what kind of violence is taking place. If the primary targets of attacks are foreign tourist as opposed to civil unrest amongst locals, you may have more cause for concern.
  3. Check travel advisories from multiple sources. For a more accurate perspective, check other government and organizational advisories to see what’s really happening in a country. Some advisories are said to be influenced by politics, so it’s a good idea to view several sources before deciding on your travel plans.
  4. Identify your safety net. Some countries do not have an effective embassy or presence to properly assist travelers if they experience problems. Check to see if your home country has the proper safety net in place if you need help. The Bureau of Consular Affairs in the US encourages US citizens traveling to foreign countries to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This program provides:
    • Notice of Travel Alerts and Warnings regarding your destination countries.
    • A means for the US Embassy in your destination country to contact you in case of an emergency, including natural disasters, civil unrest, or family emergency.
    • Important information from the US Embassy about safety conditions in the area so that you can make informed travel plans.
Enrolling in STEP is free of charge. You can request email alerts for several countries, if needed, and you can begin monitoring your destination countries far in advance of a trip.

In Conclusion

Travel advisories can have an impact on your travel insurance. Carefully evaluate your benefits when purchasing a plan to make sure you have the coverage you need in case something unexpected happens. Consider getting ‘cancel for any reason’ protection in case alerts are issued in the future and you decide to cancel your trip.
When a travel advisory is issued and you’ve already purchased a plan, read your policy wording or contact your insurance company to see how the advisory affects your plan and your coverage. Carefully evaluate the travel advisory to decide if it is serious enough to change your travel plans.
If you are already in country, check with your insurance company to see what actions you should take, if any. This could include evacuating the country altogether.
